Cornerstone Christian School

Cornerstone Christian School’s mission is to partner with families to provide a Christ-centered education, biblically developing the entire student – spirit, mind, and body. We will integrate the Word of God throughout all disciplines with the goal of sending well-educated disciples into the world to reach the lost with the Gospel (Matthew 28:19).

Philosophy of Education

Cornerstone Christian School’s philosophy of Christian education is based on the truth that God’s Word is the standard for all truth, and that the Bible is the inspired, inerrant, and authoritative Word of God. God created and sustains all things. Education in preschool starts with basic skills grounded in an appreciation of God and His Creation combined with social skills built around Christian love and respect. The elementary and high school curriculum contains the Biblical foundation of God’s truth and the understanding of the differences between a secular and Christian worldview.

All policies of the school, philosophies of subjects, curriculum materials, and teaching methods shall conform to Cornerstone Christian School's philosophy of Christian education. The Bible is the foundation and motivating force for all curricula. Cornerstone Christian School’s primary goals and objectives include:

  • To love the Lord our God with all our heart, soul, and mind (Matt. 22:37)

  • To glorify God in all that we do (1 Cor. 10:31)

  • To promote the maturity of students in doctrine and practice (Eph. 6:4, Col. 1:28-29)

  • To train students in Christian service and ministry (2 Tim. 2:2)

  • To prepare students to be critical thinkers and lifelong learners.

The Word of God teaches that parents are responsible for their children's education (Deut. 6:4-7; Eph. 6:4).  Cornerstone Christian School desires to be a trusted partner in this process.  We are dedicated to providing an environment that supports Christian values and makes provisions for the individual differences of each child, challenging them to their fullest potential in Christ.

Excellence is a key element of our educational philosophy with the recognition that all students are individually important to God and are endowed with a unique set of gifts that are to be developed.  The discipline and edification that is necessary for the development of Christ-like character will be integrated into every part of each student’s school day.  Students are expected to take responsibility for their conduct, choices, and actions and apply the knowledge they acquire in all areas of their lives.

General Information

We have put this information together to give you as much information as we can to help you decide if CCS is the right school for your family. Please know that this is a work in progress, and we will fine-tune things as we move along in the process.

Location: We anticipate that all classes will be held on our campus, which includes the church building and youth center.

Class schedules:  A four-day school week, Monday through Thursday for all grades K-12.  We anticipate that grades K-8 will meet for 4 to 4.5 hours per day and grades 9-12 for 5 to 5.5 per day. Small class sizes and focusing on meaningful work will make a shortened day very successful. A shortened day allows students to pursue other activities and gives them more time to be with their families.

Class size: Classes will be kept small with approximately 10-15 students in each class.

Class demographics: Classes will be made up of varying ages. Possible classes might be K-1st, 2nd-3rd, 4th-8th. Class demographics will be dependent upon the number of students enrolled in each age group. Mixed-age classes have many advantages.

Curriculum: We will use My Father’s World. My Father's World Christian curriculum combines the best of Charlotte Mason's ideas, Hebraic classical education, and unit studies with a Biblical worldview and global focus. My Father’s World God-centric curriculum mirrors the Greco-Roman classical approach of grammar, logic, and rhetoric.

My Father’s World in a micro-school (that’s us):

  • Thoroughly integrates God’s Word across a variety of subjects.

  • Is designed so a teacher can seamlessly lead multiple children across a wide age range.

  • Can be taught easily by a small team of teachers.

  • Provides step-by-step daily lesson plans for minimal prep time and maximum ease of use.

  • Is structured to cover required subjects in less time than an average public school day.

  • Encourages older children to help by sharing knowledge with the younger children.

Please go to their website https://www.mfwbooks.com/ to get a more in-depth look at their curriculum.

For Math, we will use different curricula for the various grades. Please see the Math Scope and Sequence page for more information.

We expect that teachers at CCS will be in full agreement with our Mission statement, Philosophy, and Statement of Faith. All staff will have to successfully pass a background check. Teachers will be selected by CCS’s Advisory Committee and confirmed by the Deacon Board of First Baptist Church. Faculty of CCS must have a high school diploma or equivalency; a college education is preferred, with at least a two-year degree.  Faculty and Staff members of CCS are to be members in good standing of First Baptist Church, or a church of like faith and practice.

To make CCS affordable for families, salaries will be minimal; however, we want to honor our staff members with a salary so that they might be able to provide for their family needs.

These are anticipated costs.

Curriculum and Materials Fee (this will be due upon registration)

Kindergarten: $250

1st: $350

2nd – 6th: $400

7th – 12th: $650

Tuition

Kindergarten – 8th: $2500 per year. If paid in full by 7/31 $2250. If paid in 10 installments (Sept. - June) $250 per month. If paid in 12 installments (July-June) $210 per month.

9th – 12th: $3000 per year. If paid in full by 7/31 $2700. If paid in 10 installments (Sept. - June) $300 per month. If paid in 12 installments (July - June) $250 per month.

Tuition and fees will not cover all the costs associated with the school. Fundraising will likely occur. We desire to keep tuition as low as possible and depending on the number of students enrolled, we may be able to offer a small discount for families with multiple students. We know it can be a challenge to pay for educating your child and we have made tuition as low as we possibly can. We are well below the monthly average of $500-$1000 per month at other Christian schools in Oregon.

We intend to have a school-wide parent/staff meeting in January 2025 to discuss CCS’s financial health. As we begin this new endeavor things may change and we want to be transparent as we seek to be good stewards of school finances.

Steps for enrollment:

  1. Parents will fill out an enrollment application and sign the Parent Agreement.

  2. Students will sign the Student Agreement.

  3. The School Advisory Board will review the application.

  4. If the application is approved an interview will be scheduled. If the application is not accepted parents will be notified and may arrange a follow-up discussion if desired.

  5. After the interview, the student's enrollment will be either approved or denied. While we desire to educate every student interested in attending CCS, we know that we might not be the right fit for all students.

Other FAQ’s

Recess: Yes, there will be time scheduled for students to be able to move and play every school day. Some days structured games will be played during that time. During bad weather, the Church’s sanctuary makes a good gym.

After-school programs:  We understand that a shortened day may make childcare difficult for working families. Currently, we do not have after-school care plans, but we are willing to discuss the possibility of such a program. If this is something that you are interested in, please let us know.

Food: With a shorter day for grades K-8  a lunch period will not be necessary. However, we will have a snack time mid-way through the morning. Students will be responsible for bringing their snacks. For grades 9-12 a short lunch break will likely be scheduled. Students will be responsible for bringing their lunch.

Accreditation: We are not an accredited school currently. Accreditation does not guarantee a good education. Non-accreditation does not mean a poor education. Our teachers will be equipped to teach the material appropriate for each grade level and students’ progress will be assessed each year to make sure they are meeting standard benchmarks. High school students will have the same number and types of credits needed to graduate as the rest of the students in Oregon.

Sports: At this time, we do not know if LHS will allow our high school students to participate on their sports teams. We anticipate a conversation soon regarding this matter.

*update on this question – information on OSAA sports and participation by non-member students. See OSAA handbook p. 41 (c) Students Attending Full Member Private Schools. A student attending a private school that is a full member of the Association, which does not offer a particular activity, may represent the public school of Joint Residence of the student and student’s parents, provided that both high school principals agree. (d) Students Attending Full Member Public Charter Schools. A student attending a public charter school that is a full member of the Association may participate on teams representing the full member public charter school only. (e) Students Attending Associate Member Private or Alternative Schools. A student attending a private school or alternative school (except public charter schools) that is an associate member of the Association may represent the public school of Joint Residence of the student and student’s parents, provided that both high school principals agree. (f) Students Attending Associate Member Public Charter Schools. A student attending a public charter school that is an associate member of the Association and does not offer any interscholastic activities may represent the public school of Joint Residence of the student and student’s parents.

This was also found in regards to other activities  ORS 339.460 allows students who are homeschooled, enrolled in a charter school, or a GED program to participate in interscholastic activities at their resident school. The law specifies that this is allowable in grades K-12, but that in grades K-8 this is restricted to those activities that occur before or after school.

Local Scholarships for College: At this time the requirement for some of the scholarships awarded to Lake County graduates states the student must be a resident and educated in Lake County for all four years of high school. In addition, the student’s parent/guardian must also be a Lake County resident all four years of high school and must still be a resident at the time of awarding scholarships.  It does not specify that they must attend LHS, Paisley, or North Lake. Homeschooled students have been awarded these scholarships in recent years. As we have not had a direct conversation with any of the board of trustees of the scholarships, we cannot give a definitive answer as to whether our graduates will be able to apply.
